Tung's Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital (hereinafter Tung's Hospital) is situated in central Taiwan, between the mountainous hinterland on one side and the Taiwan Strait on the other, where medical services are generally inadequate. Over the past 50 years, Tung's Hospital has had to meet all the demands for medical care and has built up a strong capacity for treating critical illnesses and responding to emergencies, which has led to the development of the global multinational rescue brand FORMOSA SOS.

FORMOSA SOS- Air Ambulance and Medical Air Service
FORMOSA SOS, an overseas rescue brand rooted from Taiwan, provides 24-hour emergency medical evacuation and professional medical consultation throughout the year, with offices in 194 countries around the world, serving more than 1,000 cases. From prior communication with foreign medical teams or family members about the condition of the case, transmission of medical records through the digital system, assessment of possible conditions during the transfer by emergency physicians and specialists, and care during the actual transfer process, FORMOSA SOS provides a full range of rescue services.
In order to achieve cross-border rescue, the most important thing is how to efficiently integrate personnel and equipment. Currently, the team has eight physicians, eight nurse specialists and two nurse practitioners, who are ready to be deployed according to the needs of the mission. As for equipment, Tungs’ Hospital has created an "Airborne Emergency Room" where all equipment is certified to ensure that flight safety will not be compromised when providing care to patients.
Therefore, compared to other organisations that have to look for a hospital to work with, co-ordinate with a suitable medical team, and then deploy aircraft or helicopters and related equipment, which usually takes three to four days, or even more than a week, Tungs’ Hospital can depart in as little as one day from the time it receives the call to rescue the patient, in order to fight for the patient's golden time for treatment.
At present, FORMOSA SOS has cooperated with insurance companies, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, foreign trade offices in Taiwan and Taipei Representative Offices overseas to not only provide overseas Taiwanese with medical treatment in their home countries, but also to help foreigners in Taiwan to return to their home countries for medical treatment. Tungs’ Hospital expects to introduce more point-of-care tests, such as point-of-care testing equipment (POCT), to build a more complete airborne intensive care unit.

In the early years, there were many factories in the maritime area, and accidents and occupational safety incidents were common, so the emergency department at Tung's Hospital was always faced with a variety of situations. In addition, the hospital is only about 10 minutes away from the Taichung Port and Taichung Airport, and has been working closely with local authority for more than 10 years. Whenever there is an emergency medical need for offshore wind power construction workers off Taichung or for international ships sailing off central Taiwan, the Air Force helicopters are always the first to send patients to Tungs' Hospital because of the proximity.
In order to support the huge demand for medical care, the Emergency Department at Tungs’ Hospital has an Adult Emergency Department, a Paediatric Emergency Department, a Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Care Department and a Hyperbaric Oxygen Department, and an apron on the top floor of the hospital, so that when patients arrive, they can take the lift directly to the Emergency Department in just one minute. Medical staff from the Emergency Department also regularly participate in ambulance drills at the Air Force Headquarters, simulating how to carry out rescues in helicopters and what to look out for during the flight.
During the Healthcare+ Expo 2023, Tungs’ Hospital will introduce an app for Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) scenarios that have been gamified for the public to learn more about ACLS through interactive games.
Community Care Promoting Health Equity

The ageing of the population along the coast is a serious problem, and the demand for telemedicine and home care cannot be delayed. Tung's Hospital signed a memorandum of understanding with Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. on the "Intelligent Healthcare Alliance and Digital Healthy Community Project". Based on the community under the Twin Oaks Co. Ltd., the project combines Hon Hai's high-tech computing and cloud integration technologies in the field of digital health with Tong General Hospital's advanced healthcare equipment and environment, and vertically integrates the service capacity to provide residents with a new lifestyle of a digital healthy community, from their homes to the hospital.
Tungs’ Hospital believes that one of the purposes of the digitalisation is to make healthcare more equitable, that is, through telemedicine and home care, to reduce the inability of the public to obtain appropriate medical treatment due to barriers to access, and to increase the proximity of healthcare. In the future, it is hoped to further collaborate with technology or construction companies to build smart community health checkpoints from in-hospital to out-of-hospital, with the home as the focus, to provide a telehealth care service model, and to realise an all-round smart medical monitoring and care platform.

◎Contrast Agents in Nuclear Medicine
Prostate cancer already ranks 5th among the top 10 cancers in Taiwan. Starting in 2021, Tungs’ Hospital is the first hospital in Asia to introduce a new generation of imaging to detect prostate cancer, which has been widely used internationally. Recently, Tung's Hospital has also introduced FDA-approved Auxmin PET/CT scan, which not only detects metastasis and recurrence of tumours, but also serves as the basis for primary diagnosis and staging, benefiting more patients with prostate cancer.
◎AI-assisted Baby Care System
In cooperation with HPB Optoelectronics, the system combines AI computing with near-field radar and RGB image-based "non-wearable, non-contact, remote and real-time" detection and alert modes, which can continuously and real-time monitor baby's respiration, heartbeat, body temperature and environmental temperature, sleep behaviour detection, and roll-over reminders.
In addition, the system can also monitor milk spillage or babies' mouths and noses being covered by foreign objects (e.g. towels or quilts). Meanwhile, the system is equipped with rich functions such as high-definition video transmission, two-way communication, night vision, etc., which makes it suitable for use by first-time parents as well as for applications in related care settings, such as postnatal care homes.

◎AI-assisted Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Assessment
Soteria OPZ, a sleep apnea assessment software developed by Soteria Biotech and Boshic Advanced Materials Co.,LTD., combines medical imaging, fluid dynamics, and cloud computing to provide visual information on the evaluation of respiratory constriction to assist physicians in determining the appropriate treatment for the patient by using computed tomography (CT) and taking medical images of the patient's neck, which are then uploaded to the cloud.
