Indonesia Faces a 75% Medical Equipment Gap: Leading Local Distributor Seeks Collaboration with Taiwanese Firms for Solutions

2024-11-19

As Indonesia experiences a rapid rise in healthcare demand, medical OEM/ODM (Original Equipment Manufacturing/Original Design Manufacturing) is emerging as a critical driver for the nation’s healthcare industry development. With over 270 million people, Indonesia, the world's fourth-most populous country, is witnessing a burgeoning healthcare market driven by heightened public health awareness and supportive government policies. However, the local supply of medical equipment still falls short of meeting demand.

Challenges in Local Manufacturing and Government Strategies

According to Indonesia's Ministry of Health, only 25% of the country’s medical equipment needs are met by domestic production, with the remaining 75% relying on imports. In an effort to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers, the government is actively promoting a national strategy to localize the production of medical devices. Eva Silvia, Head of the Domestic Medical Device and Home Healthcare Division at the Ministry of Health, stated, “We are committed to increasing the proportion of locally manufactured medical devices to achieve greater self-sufficiency.”

The country’s push toward industrial growth is underscored by predictions from Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Indonesia’s Minister of Industry. He projects that the market value of Indonesia's pharmaceutical and medical device industry will grow from $3.5 billion in 2021 to $6.5 billion by 2026. “To position Indonesia as a hub for medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing, we need strong international partnerships to attract more investment and enhance local production capabilities,” he noted.

Rising Demand for OEM/ODM Partnerships

This environment has catalyzed the demand for collaboration in the OEM/ODM sector, now a core strategy for the advancement of Indonesia’s healthcare industry. Local businesses are actively seeking international partnerships to enhance manufacturing technologies, expand market reach, and address the country's growing healthcare needs.
