Chile’s healthcare sector, grappling with an aging population, chronic disease surges, and strained public resources, is turning to international solutions. At the forefront of this push, Gabriela Garnham, General Manager of the Asociación Gremial de Dispositivos Médicos de Chile (ADIMECH), visited 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan, aiming to secure high-quality medical products and strategic partnerships to address Chile’s reform needs.

Chile’s healthcare industry is at a pivotal crossroads, undergoing rapid transformation driven by demographic shifts and evolving policy. While Chile ranks among Latin America’s leaders in per capita healthcare spending, its domestic medical device manufacturing remains limited, with over 90% of the market supplied by imports. This heavy reliance on foreign products, combined with a rapidly aging population, rising rates of chronic disease, and persistent shortages in public healthcare resources and hospital beds, has intensified the country’s search for international solutions.

Amid these pressures, Chile is actively seeking overseas partners. In December, Gabriela Garnham, General Manager of the Asociación Gremial de Dispositivos Médicos de Chile (ADIMECH), visited 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan. Her mission: to identify high-quality medical products and strategic partners from Taiwan to help address Chile’s ongoing healthcare reforms.

Delegations from the Asociación Gremial de Dispositivos Médicos de Chile (ADIMECH) and other countries' industry associations gained firsthand insights into the latest medical and healthcare advancements displaying at the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan.

“Our dependence on imported medical products is extremely high-that’s where Taiwanese companies have a real opportunity,” Garnham stated. Forecasts indicate that Chile’s medical device market will expand at a robust 8.3% compound annual growth rate from 2023 to 2028, driven by public investment in healthcare infrastructure and rising demand for advanced medical technologies.

Chile’s regulatory environment further enhances its appeal. The country maintains relatively relaxed oversight, currently regulating only ten categories of medical devices. Most products require little to no company or product registration, dramatically lowering barriers to entry and reducing operational and regulatory risks for new market entrants-especially those from Taiwan seeking rapid access to Latin America.

The Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan serves as a vital platform for international exchange, attracting global healthcare c-level professionals and fostering partnerships between Taiwanese and Chilean companies.

Beyond regulatory advantages, Chile’s stable economy and extensive network of free trade agreements position it as a strategic regional hub for medical technology exchange. The government’s ongoing investments in chronic disease management and healthcare infrastructure, coupled with a highly skilled medical workforce and openness to innovation-including telemedicine and digital health-create fertile ground for international collaboration.

Garnham’s visit to Taiwan not only showcased Taiwan’s strengths in smart healthcare innovation but also laid the groundwork for a new era of bilateral cooperation. As Chile’s healthcare industry becomes increasingly import-driven and open to new technologies, Taiwanese firms-renowned for flexible manufacturing and high-quality solutions-are well positioned to play a key role in this cross-border partnership, unlocking mutual benefits and shaping the next chapter of healthcare in both markets.
