As the world grapples with aging populations, rising chronic disease rates, and uneven access to healthcare resources, Australia’s healthcare system has faced mounting pressures. In response, the Australian government has embraced digital transformation, launching the National Digital Health Strategy-a comprehensive blueprint aimed at building a patient-centered, data-driven, and highly connected smart healthcare system to improve service efficiency and accessibility.
Against this backdrop, Emma Hossack, CEO of the Medical Software Industry Association of Australia (MSIA), visited Taiwan and delivered a keynote at the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan. Hossack praised Taiwan’s leadership in medical hardware and highlighted the strong complementarity between Taiwan and Australia in health technology development, calling for joint efforts to integrate software and hardware and set new global benchmarks for healthcare.

Emma Hossack, CEO of the Medical Software Industry Association (MSIA), addressed the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan, highlighting Taiwan's leadership in medical hardware and Australia's digital health transformation, emphasizing the complementary potential for global healthcare standards.
"Taiwan’s world-class hardware manufacturing is a critical capability that many countries lack,” Hossack noted. During the Expo, she singled out a Taiwanese company specializing in FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standards, commending its technical excellence in driving medical data interoperability. In contrast, Hossack pointed out that Australia’s strengths lie in medical software development and a robust regulatory framework, covering radiology, pathology, hospital management, and telemedicine-creating a “perfect match” for collaboration with Taiwan’s hardware ecosystem.
As a key advocate for Australia’s digital health industry, MSIA works closely with the government on core issues such as cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, privacy protection, and system interoperability. Hossack proudly shared that during the pandemic, the association partnered with the government to launch a fully virtual e-prescription system in just 10 months-a process that would have taken a decade before COVID-19-demonstrating Australia’s speed and resilience in digital health innovation.

At the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan, Emma Hossack engaged in significant discussions with key decision-makers from Taiwanese firms, exploring potential collaborations in the evolving landscape of medical technology and healthcare innovation.
For Taiwanese companies eyeing the Australian market, Hossack offered concrete advice: deeply understand Australia’s stringent regulations on Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), AI applications, cybersecurity, and data privacy; and adopt FHIR standards to ensure interoperability and market compliance..
Hossack’s visit has built a vital bridge between Taiwan and Australia in medical technology. By combining Taiwan’s deep expertise in hardware manufacturing with Australia’s mature software development and regulatory experience, the two countries are poised not only to take a leading position in the global health tech race but also to jointly shape the future paradigm of smart healthcare.
