The Central and Eastern European medical device market is rapidly expanding and is expected to surpass €6 billion by 2030. Poland alone is projected to contribute over 40% of this, reaching a market size of €2.5 billion (approximately USD 2.7 billion). Recognizing this strategic opportunity for mutual market development, Sylwia Miezio, Communication Specialist of the Polish Chamber of Medical Devices and Commerce (POLMED), led a delegation to Taiwan to attend the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan.
The visit aimed to foster collaboration with Taiwanese companies to jointly develop new opportunities in the European medical industry. This trip not only highlights Poland’s strategic market position and strong growth momentum but also underscores Taiwan’s crucial role in the future European medical supply chain.

Sylwia Miezio, Communication Specialist of the Polish Chamber of Medical Devices and Commerce (POLMED), highlighting the significant medical device market and business opportunities within Eastern Europe at the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan.
Poland represents a gateway to Eastern European healthcare markets. As the largest medical device consumer in Eastern Europe, Poland has nearly 40 million people. Its medical device market reached USD 2.9 billion in 2020, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next decade exceeding Western Europe’s average of 4%. Miezio emphasized, “Poland relies heavily on imports-74% of medical devices and 90% of raw materials are sourced from abroad. This presents a prime opportunity for Taiwanese companies.”
Highlighting the objectives of visiting Taiwan, Miezio emphasized that Europe faces the challenge of an aging society and is in urgent need of more innovative solutions. The achievements showcased at the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan in AI medical applications, remote health management systems, and smart medical devices are attracting organizations like POLMED to seek like-minded partners to address the evolving healthcare landscape in Europe.
Miezio also highlighted Poland’s upcoming 2025 presidency of the European Union Council, which not only affirms Poland’s geopolitical role but also opens a strategic window for Taiwanese medical firms to enter the European market.
Currently, POLMED represents nearly 120 medical device companies and is increasingly focusing on medical technology startups to drive the next wave of industry innovation. According to Miezio, five major trends are shaping the European medical device market: patient-centric care, full digitalization, advanced technology adoption, system resilience, and sustainability. In Eastern Europe, demand is strongest for non-invasive devices, with surgical and therapeutic equipment and laboratory diagnostic instruments also experiencing growth.

Sylwia Miezio and Taiwanese medical device companies explored potential collaborations and partnerships at the Expo, focusing on the growing Eastern European market.
Beyond structural market demand, Poland faces additional pressure from the influx of Ukrainian refugees, posing significant challenges to the healthcare system. “Innovative solutions are urgently needed to address this humanitarian crisis, presenting another opportunity for Taiwanese companies,” Miezio added.
In fact, there is a significant untapped potential for Poland-Taiwan cooperation in healthcare. Miezio sincerely invited Taiwanese companies to engage with POLMED and participate in Europe’s next wave of medical advancements. Looking ahead, there is great potential for Poland and Taiwan to move beyond commercial cooperation and work together to create value for global health and well-being—building a strong, long-term partnership to navigate the new era of healthcare.
