Indonesia, with a population of 278 million, is experiencing a rapidly growing demand for medical devices. Rd. Kartono Dwidjosewojo, Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Medical and Laboratory Device Enterprises (GAKESLAB), led a delegation to participate in the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan. The visit aims to provide an in-depth overview of Indonesia’s medical device market and its future opportunities, while actively seeking closer cooperation with Taiwan to achieve mutual benefits.
Rd. Kartono Dwidjosewojo, Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Medical and Laboratory Device Enterprises (GAKESLAB), highlighting the significant and growing demand for medical devices in Indonesia and Taiwan's potential as a key partner at the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan.
According to official Indonesian data, the country’s medical device imports reached USD 2.331 billion, far exceeding exports of only USD 614 million, highlighting a significant unmet demand for quality international medical equipment. Dwidjosowojo noted that the new Indonesian government has prioritized health policies, planning to provide free health check-ups to over 52 million people starting in 2025. This initiative presents a major challenge for the healthcare system and signals a huge demand for medical equipment.
More importantly, Indonesia plans to build 300 new hospitals and establish 300 medical schools within the next five years. “This represents a massive project for global medical device suppliers,” Dwidjosowojo stressed.
Indonesia is not only a buyer but is also developing its domestic medical device manufacturing. The government is promoting local production policies aiming to increase local content in medical devices to 40%. “This creates excellent opportunities for international companies to partner with Indonesian manufacturers through technology transfer and joint production to jointly explore the market,” Dwidjosowojo explained.
During the visit, he highlighted Taiwan’s capabilities in ventilators, ICU equipment, diagnostic instruments, and AI medical technologies, which complement Indonesia’s needs. He urged Taiwanese companies to engage directly with the Indonesian market via association platforms, which provide not only market information but also regulatory interpretation and connections to local governments and potential partners.

Rd. Kartono Dwidjosewojo, along with C-level executives from Taiwan’s leading healthcare companies and other Indonesian delegates, examined Taiwanese medical technologies and discussed potential collaborations at the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan.
It is worth noting that some Indonesian local manufacturers have made progress in products such as infant incubators, hospital beds, wheelchairs, and patient monitors, exporting to nearly 40 countries and demonstrating Indonesia’s rising manufacturing potential.
With Indonesia’s strong and growing medical demand and increasing government investment in modernizing healthcare systems, the cooperation prospects between Taiwan and Indonesia in the medical device sector are very promising. Industry experts generally agree that the two countries have significant complementary advantages in technology exchange, manufacturing collaboration, and joint market development, which will create substantial business opportunities and growth potential for both sides.
