As the global medical supply chain undergoes dramatic restructuring, Indonesia is quietly accelerating a revolution in the localization of its healthcare industry. This Southeast Asian nation of 280 million people is advancing its healthcare self-sufficiency at an astonishing pace. During the 2024 Healthcare+ Expo Taiwan, Erwin Hermanto, Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Medical Devices Manufacturers Association (ASPAKI), visited to Taiwan to actively engage in industry matchmaking and high-level discussions, paving the way for Indonesia to find reliable technology partners and deepen international cooperation.

Healthcare Transformation Takes Hold: Indonesia Advances Self-Reliance

Following demographic shifts and the impact of the pandemic, the Indonesian government is vigorously promoting healthcare reforms with two main goals: strengthening the resilience of its health insurance system and introducing innovative technologies. The aim is to reverse the long-standing structural dependence on imports and transform Indonesia into a country with strong domestic manufacturing capabilities. According to research institutions, Indonesia’s medical device market is expected to exceed $3.1 billion by 2028.

Driven by government policy, Indonesia’s “local content” initiative has already shown initial results. Hermanto revealed that the share of imported medical devices has dropped from 92% before the pandemic to 52% currently. This not only demonstrates the industry’s determination to upgrade but also sends a strong signal of openness to foreign cooperation. However, this does not mean Indonesia is closing the door to international partnerships. Hermanto emphasized in his speech, “Indonesia welcomes partners with technical capabilities who are willing to engage in deep collaboration to jointly build the industry supply chain."

Taiwan’s Strengths Align with Indonesia’s Needs: The Time is Ripe for Joint Ventures and Technology Transfer

This transformation presents a critical entry point for Taiwan’s medical technology industry. From precision manufacturing and medical device R&D to integrated smart healthcare solutions, Taiwanese companies possess mature technologies and flexible cooperation models. This is not merely about “selling products” but an opportunity to expand into the Southeast Asian market and enhance brand influence. As Indonesia’s domestic medical device manufacturing capacity grows, Taiwan’s technology and management expertise can be simultaneously exported, achieving a qualitative leap from supply to co-creation. In the future, both sides can develop joint ventures, technology transfers, and even co-establish R&D centers to jointly build Indonesia’s local healthcare ecosystem.

Beyond hardware manufacturing cooperation, the Indonesian government is pushing a healthcare transformation from a “treatment-centered” to a “prevention-first” approach. This shift toward preventive medicine opens new business opportunities for Taiwan in fields such as in vitro diagnostics (IVD), health monitoring devices, and digital health platforms. Indonesia’s demand for smart health solutions is expected to grow exponentially, and Taiwan’s innovative technologies in these areas are well-positioned to fill gaps in the Indonesian market.

Creating a Win-Win Future by Seizing Indonesia’s Healthcare Industry Transformation Opportunity

Hermanto’s cooperation blueprint not only signals business opportunities for Taiwanese companies but also represents a shared vision for the future of the healthcare industry. Indonesia’s healthcare transformation journey is waiting for partners like Taiwan—who have innovation capabilities and industrial strength—to join this train toward mutual prosperity, injecting new vitality into Indonesia’s healthcare development and achieving a win-win outcome.

Hermanto’s visit brought not only cooperation opportunities but also conveyed Indonesia’s determination to reform its healthcare industry. This transformation path requires more international partners, and Taiwan’s industrial strength and innovation capacity are exactly what Indonesia urgently needs. Taiwanese companies that seize this wave of change will have the chance to jointly build a new healthcare blueprint for Southeast Asia with Indonesia, realizing mutually beneficial cooperation.
