The 9th Healthcare Expo Taiwan will be held at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 1 from December 4th to 7th, expecting nearly 40 overseas industry associations to visit Taiwan in search of collaboration opportunities with Taiwan’s medical and biotechnology sectors. Ahead of the event, the organizers have launched a special “International Associations Interview Series,” featuring first-time visiting representatives who share their perspectives on Taiwan’s market potential and cooperation opportunities, helping domestic companies prepare for early business matchmaking.
The interviewer, the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA), founded in 1992, represents small and mid-sized U.S. medical technology companies and serves as one of the two major MedTech associations in the United States, alongside AdvaMed®. The organization supports members through policy advocacy, regulatory engagement, innovation support, and global market access initiatives.
A Key Voice for U.S. MedTech SMEs — MDMA’s First Delegation to Taiwan
This visit marks MDMA’s first-ever official delegation to Taiwan. The delegation includes Ed Rozynski, Senior Policy Advisor, and Steve Bridges, International Affairs Consultant based at MDMA’s Brussels office in Belgium.
Ed explained that MDMA currently represents over 300 member companies, about half of which are startups or early-stage innovators that have not yet obtained FDA approval, while the rest are established manufacturers — including major players such as Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson. MDMA’s mission is to help smaller innovators overcome regulatory hurdles and expand their global presence.
Seeking “More Tech Than Med” Partners from Taiwan
Steve highlighted Taiwan’s global leadership in ICT and electronics manufacturing, expressing interest in meeting “More Tech Than Med” companies — those that bring computer science technology, sensing technology, or AI imaging expertise into healthcare innovation. “These technology-driven teams, when integrated with clinical and medical expertise, can create exceptional value in the fields of smart healthcare and international market expansion,” he said.
MDMA’s focus areas for potential collaboration include cardiology, orthopedics, implantable devices, diagnostic imaging, and in-vitro diagnostics — key sectors where MDMA members hold strong R&D capabilities and market growth potential.
Helping Taiwanese Firms Enter the U.S. Market — Joining MDMA Enables Regulatory Connectivity
According to Steve, Taiwanese companies do not need a U.S. office to join MDMA and can enjoy the same membership benefits as U.S.-based firms. Members gain access to:
Through MDMA, Taiwanese firms can also network with U.S. partners to explore collaboration or product testing opportunities.
Ed and Steve emphasized that this is MDMA’s first collective visit to Taiwan, aimed at understanding the local MedTech ecosystem and establishing long-term partnerships with hospitals and companies. They believe Taiwan and the U.S. can form complementary cooperation in clinical adoption, regulatory strategy, and market development, driving the globalization of medical innovation and opening new dialogues with regulatory authorities.
Understanding Taiwan’s Healthcare System for Future Market Strategy
Steve added that the visit also aims to help MDMA members better understand Taiwan’s healthcare environment, including the evaluation mechanisms, procurement processes, and decision-making timelines for adopting new technologies in hospitals.
This knowledge will help members assess partnership and market-entry feasibility in Taiwan and serve as a strategic foundation for expansion into the broader Asian market.
