Following the inclusion of more cancer drugs in Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI), hospitals are also investing in resources for cancer patients. Taipei Veterans General Hospital (TVGH) unveiled a "Cancer Resource Centre" on 2 November to provide advice and a dedicated space for patients. Taipei Veterans General Hospital Superintendent Wei-Ming Chen said the Heavy Ion Therapy Centre, which opened in May this year, is expected to serve more than 100 patients by the end of this year.

Chen pointed out that more than one-third of the hospital's patients are cancer patients, and the number is increasing.

Chen introduced TVGH's new building, which operated in April last year, focuses on cancer treatment and hospitalisation, with a total of 447 beds. The new building allows for more two-bed patient rooms and ties the room rate to NHI.

The Cancer Resource Centre on the first floor of the new building, combined with the outpatient chemotherapy area on the second floor and the inpatient wards on the third floor and above, has greatly improved the accessibility and capacity of the service. In the future, it will expand its collaboration with relevant professional and charitable organisations to take on greater roles and benefit more cancer patients.
