Tri-Service General Hospital

Traditionally, for patients with strabismus and abnormal eye movement, cameras were employed to record the nine different directions of the eye position before-and-after the surgery. The prism diopter measurements described the amount of misalignment of the eyes. However, the eye position measurements readout varied due to poor cooperation of the patient and the inconsistency of examiners’ operation. In addition, some abnormal eye movement diseases are often missed during casual clinical examination due to the small amplitude of ocular position change. Currently, computer can analyze the eye movements by observing the difference in reflection segmentation from the pupil, iris and sclera plus eye position using desktop or hand-held imaging system. This project adopts a new wearable design (a smart goggle recording system), which built by infrared dual-sync camera optical system to do measurements. Compared to other hand-held or desktop devices, our system kept the distance and position to the eyes short; hence, it makes the detection more dynamically accurate under higher resolutions. In addition, the device is comfortable to wear. Therefore, our new smart goggle recording system facilitated the standardized and objective measurements of documentation of the eye movements for patients with strabismus or abnormal eye movements.
