Special Education in the Psychiatric Center – Integrating Special Needs Education and Mental Health Services in Adolescent Day Treatment Program
For most adolescents, life revolves around family and school as they begin to find their place in society. The positive experiences both at home and school help with the pressures encountered on the journey into adulthood. However, for youths with mental illness, difficulties to overcome certain challenges make school even tougher and the chaos in their lives often fractures relationships within the family. Therefore prompt intervention from the mental health services and the special needs program in schools can provide crucial assistance. It not only stabilizes the patient but also offers opportunities to continue academic education and reintegration back into the community.
Taoyuan Psychiatric Center (TYPC) has always been invested in providing accessible child and adolescent mental health care. In an effort to reconcile global standards with local ingenuity, we identified five key elements in the reintegration of teens back into schools and communities: Illness management, Family network, Occupational rehabilitation, Empowerment and Navigation into community. We chose the acronym iFONE for its phonetic similarity to iPhone, in hopes that the care provided will bring to mind qualities such as excellence, efficiency, innovation and connections with people.
From 2015 to 2017, TYPC’s Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry led the nation with an average of 21,224 outpatient visits per year. The annual acute care unit admissions dropped 49% and parental satisfaction was above 97%. We had introduced the nation’s first hospital schooling program. The program focuses on retention of student status at the youths’ original schools to facilitate a smoother transition back into school life. Every single graduate has gone on to continue education at a higher educational institute. Furthermore, the satisfaction rates of the vocational training aspects of the program were above 85%. With these positive effects, the program helps youths pave the way to a healthier and happier future.
For recent years, there is a rising trend for substance abuse which results in personal, family, public health, and legal problems. The Department of Addiction Psychiatry of Taoyuan Psychiatric Center (TYPC) has been devoted to provide a safe, trustworthy and warm treatment for people with substance use problems and keeps on improving quality of service, education and research fields and also offers outreach programs for education and treatment. The services of Department of Addiction Psychiatry of TYPC have become a national benchmark in the field of addiction treatment.
Based upon the achievements, TYPC established the Integrated Addiction Treatment Center Pilot Program of Northern Taiwan in 2018 with the funding from Department of Mental and Oral Health of Ministry of Health and Welfare.Research and education were also included in the program in order to provide more sophisticated and multi-modal drug treatment programs to help people with substance use problems to conquer addiction problems and promote social stability as well as public health.
