The term Theranostics is a combination of therapy and diagnosis, which transforms the concept of a single treatment into the integration of diagnosis and treatment. Taking prostate cancer as an example, it is currently known that radioisotope-labeled prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) can be used for imaging through PET scan. This imaging is arguably the best tool for detecting lymph nodes and distant metastases in prostate cancer. The Lu-177-PSMA therapeutic drug approved by the FDA in March 2022 uses PSMA to allow radioactive drugs to be distributed to cancer cells, maximizing the true meaning of theranostics. Chung Shan Medical University Hospital had invested in the construction of the only cyclotron center, together with 3 PET scanners, in central Taiwan more than 20 years ago. In view of the increasing role of PSMA PET/CT in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, Chung Shan Medical University Hospital is hoping to start the examination service of Ga-68 PSMA positron scan in the near future, and at the same time expand the function of isotope ward to provide Lu-177 PSMA treatment room for prostate cancer patients. In addition to prostate cancer, there are many ongoing theranostics researches. Chung Shan Medical University Hospital will continue our researches to develop theranostic strategies to improve cancer care.
