Taiwan Blood Services Foundation

Taiwan Blood Services Foundation has been implementing a universal nucleic acid test (NAT) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and hepatitis B virus (HBV) in blood donations since 2013. Compared to serological screening, NAT screening significantly reduces the window period and improves transfusion safety.
Highlights of NAT screening in blood donors:
1. Triplex testing: Simultaneously detect three different viruses, including HIV, HCV, and HBV.
2. High sensitivity: Utilize transcription-mediated amplification (TMA) method.
3. State-of-the-art technology: Updated testing instruments were adopted, keeping pace with developed countries.
Achievements of NAT screening in blood donors:
1. Preventing infectious blood from being supplied to hospitals for transfusion: As of June 2023, NAT screening has detected over 7,000 additional infectious donations.
2. A milestone towards zero transfusion-transmitted infection (TTI): No HIV, HCV, or HBV TTI case was identified after implementing NAT screening.
3. Assisting blood donors in detecting infections: Early detection of infections allows for prompt treatment.
4. Contribution to national infectious disease control: Immediate reporting of infection cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention enables disease surveillance, and data on positive NAT rates inform national disease prevention strategies.
