Taiwan Society of Laboratory Medicine

Medical laboratories should establish both internal quality management system and engage in external inter-laboratory quality assessments to meet clinical quality control standards. In International Laboratory Accreditation Standards, external inter-laboratory quality assessments, referred as accuracy evaluations, often known as Proficiency Testing (PT). Their objective is to utilize testing services offered by PT organizations that adhere to specific criteria, and by comparing individual test results with those of peer laboratories, which then deliver external quality assessment for the laboratory.
The Taiwan Society of Laboratory Medicine (TSLM) initiated its PT services in 2000. In March 2011, secured accreditation from the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation under accreditation ID P008. TSLM became the pioneering national entity to attain international accreditation for PT services in the medical field.
TSLM adheres to the standards set forth for PT organizations as outlined in the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) document ISO/IEC 17043:2010. This involves offering the necessary assessments to various departments or laboratories. Furthermore, TSLM enables participants to request specific testing qualifications recognized by health authorities. The results of proficiency tests are documented in a “Proficiency Testing Assessment Report”, accompanied by a “Summary Report”. These reports are issued to elucidate the consolidated results and serve as valuable educational resources.
